Who this is for. Builders and operators who want software that can take multi-step actions across tools, not only reply in chat, and who are deciding where to sit between a hosted agent, a framework, and a no-code platform.

Who this is not for. Users who only need a single-turn chatbot or a coding autocomplete plugin, and teams that already run a settled agent stack and are not re-evaluating who builds or hosts the loop.

• Choose by how much of the loop you want to own: a fully hosted agent you point at a brief, a framework you code, or a no-code builder an operator configures.
• Check which tools the agent may call, such as a browser, a shell, or your SaaS apps, and how human approvals and handoff work before it acts.
• For production use, prefer products with audit logs, permission controls, and a documented path to pause work or hand it back to a person.
• Open-source agents leave model and secret hosting to you; hosted agents trade that for a vendor contract, so budget for whichever side you choose.

General-purpose autonomous agents

Brief-in, result-out agents that a person runs directly with little setup, whether hosted in a cloud workspace or installed on their own machine. The next group is the reverse: code you assemble yourself before anything runs.

Agent frameworks for developers

Developer-facing libraries and workflow engines that you wire into a custom agent loop, keeping behavior and state under your control. Nothing works until you build it, and unlike the next group the loop is written rather than configured.

Enterprise and no-code business agents

Business platforms where an operator connects agents to CRM, email, and internal tools through configuration rather than code, inside the product's own interface. That is the shift from the previous group, where a developer writes the loop first.
