Buyer's guide

Choosing a VS Code AI extension

How to choose among AI coding extensions for Visual Studio Code, and when an AI-native editor is a better fit than a plugin. The groups follow the job — complete a line, run a task, or review a diff — and this index does not rank or benchmark them.

How to choose

Who this is for. Developers who want AI help without leaving Visual Studio Code, and teams that standardise on VS Code and need an extension their whole team can install.

Who this is not for. People already committed to a standalone AI editor, or those who mainly want a terminal agent rather than an in-editor assistant. This page does not rank extensions or measure which one writes better code, and it is not a ranked Top-N list; readers who want a leaderboard should look elsewhere.

All-in-one assistant extensions

Extensions that combine completion, chat and inline edits inside the editor you already use. Unlike the agentic group next, they stay inside a suggestion or a chat turn and do not take a task through commands and tests.

Frequently asked questions

Does this guide rank VS Code extensions?

No. It groups indexed products by what they do inside the editor and assigns no scores. It reports no hands-on test results.

Can I use more than one AI extension at once?

Technically yes, but overlapping completions and shortcuts can conflict. Many teams standardise on one primary assistant and add a separate review tool.

Is an AI-native editor better than an extension?

It depends on your constraints. Extensions keep your current setup and keybindings; AI-native editors can offer deeper multi-file agents but replace the editor. This guide lists both without preference.

Do these extensions work on private or enterprise code?

Terms differ by vendor and plan. Check each product's documentation for data-retention, training-use and enterprise controls before using it on private code.

Can an extension use a local model?

Some can. Agentic extensions may let you point them at a self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible endpoint — such as a local model runtime — instead of the vendor's cloud. Support differs by extension, so check its own documentation for supported providers and for what still leaves your machine.
