# Research Q&A with verifiable sources

How to choose a tool when the answer matters and you need to check the sources behind it, not just read a confident summary. The groups separate live web answers, academic search, notebooks you feed, and browsers with a cited layer, and this index does not rank them.

## How to choose

**Who this is for.** Researchers, analysts, students and writers who need answers they can trace back to a source, and who will open the citations rather than trust the summary.

**Who this is not for.** People who want a general creative assistant or code generation, or answers about private documents that never touch the web. This page does not rank research tools or test which citations are more accurate.

- Decide what counts as a source for you: any web page, reputable news, or peer-reviewed literature. That single choice narrows the field sharply.
- Check whether citations are shown inline and link to the exact passage, or only to a domain — the first is verifiable, the second is a hint.
- Test with a question whose answer you already know, and see whether the cited sources actually support the claim.
- Consider whether you need synthesis across many sources, or extraction from one you already trust.
- Check how the tool handles disagreement and uncertainty, rather than only how it presents a confident answer.
- Repeat a question and check whether the same sources come back; a citation you cannot reproduce is harder to audit, so treat a single run as a lead rather than a settled answer.

## General web answer engines

Engines that answer a question from live web search and attach links you can open to verify the claim. Unlike the academic group next, the unit is a web page, not a paper, a study or a retrieved passage.

- [Perplexity](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/perplexity/) (Perplexity AI) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2022-12. AI answer engine that combines web search with cited, conversational answers.
- [You.com](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/you-com/) (You.com) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2021-11. Web search and research APIs for AI applications, after a pivot from consumer AI search to an API-first data layer.
- [Genspark](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/genspark/) (Genspark) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2024-06. AI workspace that grew out of an answer engine, offering agents and tools for research, presentations, documents, and task automation.
- [Felo](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/felo/) (Felo) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2024-07. Multilingual AI search engine that generates sourced answers and mind-map style summaries.
- [iAsk](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/iask/) (iAsk.Ai) — Answer Engines, Free, launched 2023. AI search engine that returns direct, sourced answers to natural-language questions.

## Academic and evidence-focused search

Tools built around papers, structured evidence or programmatic search, where the unit is a study or a passage rather than a web page. Unlike the notebook below, they search a corpus you do not upload yourself.

- [Consensus](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/consensus/) (Consensus) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2022. AI answer engine that finds and summarizes findings from peer-reviewed scientific research papers.
- [Elicit](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/elicit/) (Elicit) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2022. AI research assistant that finds, screens, and summarizes academic papers to help answer research questions.
- [Exa](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/exa/) (Exa) — Answer Engines, Paid, launched 2021. Neural web search API built for AI applications, returning meaning-based results and page content.
- [Liner](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/liner/) (Liner) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2015. AI research assistant suite for search, academic research, and writing that answers questions with cited sources.

## Notebooks you feed with your own sources

Tools that answer only from documents you supply, which makes grounding easier to inspect but limits coverage to your sources. Unlike the browser group next, there is no live web layer; if you did not add the source, it is not in the answer.

- [NotebookLM](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/notebooklm/) (Google) — Productivity, Free, launched 2023-07. Google's AI research and note-taking assistant that grounds answers in a user's uploaded sources.

## Browsers and search with built-in answers

Browsers and search portals that add a cited answer layer, useful when you want citations without changing how you browse. Unlike the answer engines above, the cited layer sits on top of browsing rather than replacing the search box.

- [Comet](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/comet/) (Perplexity) — Answer Engines, Freemium, launched 2025-07. AI-powered web browser from Perplexity with a built-in assistant that answers questions and performs tasks across pages.
- [Andi](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/andi/) (Andi) — Answer Engines, Free, launched 2022. Conversational AI search engine that answers questions and summarizes pages instead of showing ad-driven links.
- [Ecosia](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/ecosia/) (Ecosia GmbH) — Answer Engines, Free, launched 2009-12. Berlin-based search engine that pairs web search with AI overviews, an AI chat, and an option to turn AI off.
- [Qwant](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/qwant/) (Qwant) — Answer Engines, Free, launched 2013. French privacy-focused search engine that adds AI-generated answers and one-click web page summaries.
- [Naver](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/naver/) (Naver Corporation) — Answer Engines, Free, launched 2026-06. South Korean search portal whose service includes AI Briefing summaries and the AI Tab conversational search interface.

- [ChatGPT Atlas](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/chatgpt-atlas/) (OpenAI) — AI Assistants, Freemium, launched 2025-10. Web browser from OpenAI with ChatGPT built in for summarizing pages, answering questions, and completing tasks in an agent mode.
- [Dia](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/dia/) (The Browser Company (Atlassian)) — AI Assistants, Freemium, launched 2025-06. AI browser from The Browser Company, acquired by Atlassian, with an assistant that chats about and works across open tabs.

## Experiment method — not executed

Status: not executed. No answer engine was run for this guide, so it publishes no measured answer, citation check, latency, score or ranking. What follows is the reproducible plan and the conditions that are missing.

The intended test gives every cited-answer tool the same fixed set of questions and checks whether the sources it cites actually contain the claim, not whether the answer sounds confident. Nothing was executed in this round — no account, API key or entitlement was used — so the plan below has no results and this guide reports documented citation behaviour only.

### Method (planned, not yet executed)

- Test target: whether a tool's answer cites a source that really contains the claim. Two questions have an answer that appears only in material published after most models' training data (the freshness probe), and one is unanswerable from the sources on offer (the honesty probe).
- Fixed input: every tool would receive the identical five questions from one file (docs/tests/research-inputs.md, still to be created), so the wording is the same for all of them.
- Task: ask each tool the same five questions. A tool passes the freshness probe only if it cites a source that actually contains the fact, and passes the honesty probe only if it declines.
- Citation check: for every citation URL a tool returns, open the URL, read it, and record whether it loads and whether the page actually contains the claim it is attached to. A URL that does not load, or a page that does not state the claim, is recorded as not supporting it.
- Recorded per tool: product and plan (free tier or paid), account type, and the exact model or mode selected; the full answer text, unedited, with every citation URL; token or call usage and the metered cost if the tool bills per use; and the date, time and region of the run.
- Environment required before any run: a reachable, signed-in web answer engine and, where the tool bills per use, a funded key. None of these was available to this project in this round.

### Missing conditions — what is unconfirmed, and what this does not show

- No run was executed this round, so no answer, citation check, latency or cost is reported for any tool below.
- ChatGPT: an account is required to use the product; a free tier exists, and a paid plan is needed only for the newer models. Its pricing page answered HTTP 200 on 2026-10-10 but renders prices in JavaScript, so no price was read.
- Perplexity: an account is required; a free tier exists and Pro is the paid plan. Its Pro page answered HTTP 403 to this project's fetcher on 2026-10-10, so no plan price was read.
- You.com: the API needs a key and a signed-in account; new keys come with free credits, so a paid plan is not the precondition.
- Genspark: an account is required and a free plan exists. The public help-centre pricing page answered HTTP 200 on 2026-10-13, and its plan prices are recorded on the product page.
- Microsoft Copilot: a Microsoft account is required; core Copilot features are free and the paid plan is optional. The entitlement actually needed for a cited-answer run was not confirmed this round.
- Exa: the API needs a key; new developers receive free credits, so a paid plan is not the precondition.
- Where the plan a tool needs in order to run is not confirmed, it is recorded as unconfirmed rather than assumed to be paid. A free tier being available does not mean a free-tier run was performed — none was.
- This is the plan for a method, not a benchmark: it cannot say which engine cites more accurately, and it does not rank, score or compare the products listed in this guide.

**Cost.** Nothing was run, so there is no measured cost and no metered amount was recorded. No account or paid plan was purchased for this theme; only the vendor pages named below were read.

### Public method and copies

The first entry is the full method document published on this site; the second is the index of every published copy. There is no run record here, because no run exists.

### What was not executed

[ChatGPT](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/chatgpt/) · [Perplexity](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/perplexity/) · [You.com](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/you-com/) · [Genspark](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/genspark/) · [Microsoft Copilot](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/microsoft-copilot/) · [Exa](https://globalaiproductindex.com/products/exa/)

This round executed none of these products, so this page reports no measured result for them. The condition each one needs is stated above; where a condition was not confirmed it is recorded as unconfirmed, not assumed to be paid. Their pages and comparisons report documented behaviour with a source and a check date.

## FAQ

**Does this guide rank research tools?**

No. It groups indexed products by the kind of sources they cite and assigns no scores. It reports no accuracy or benchmark results.

**Do citations guarantee the answer is correct?**

No. A citation shows where a claim is attributed, not that the claim is true or that the source is good. Always open the source and check that it says what the answer implies.

**Is this the same as the AI answer engines guide?**

They overlap. The AI answer engines guide lists the category; this guide focuses on the research task and how to judge citation quality, so it links back to the same products from a different angle.

**Which is better for academic work?**

Tools built around papers and structured evidence usually make study-level claims easier to verify than general web engines, but coverage varies by field. Check a few known papers before relying on one.

**Do the same questions always cite the same sources?**

No. These tools retrieve at answer time, so the same question can cite different pages on different runs, and a cited page may not fully support the claim attached to it. Treat one run as a lead, not a settled answer, and re-run it or open the source when it matters.
